Required Employment Paperwork
Before your first day of employment, you must schedule an appointment with the Office of People and Culture to complete your Form I‑9 and tax forms (W‑4, MI‑W‑4, and CF‑W‑4). These forms are required to comply with federal and state regulations and are necessary for you to receive pay. Links to the required forms are provided below.
Scheduling Your Appointment
To set up an appointment with the Office of People and Culture, login to your Handshake account and navigate to the Career Center. Then, click on appointments and schedule a new appointment. Choose the “student employment” category and choose a time and date that works best for your schedule prior to your first day of employment.
Identification Requirements for Your Appointment:
For your scheduled appointment, you must present a valid form of identification. Acceptable documents include:
- A valid passport, or
- A driver’s license combined with a Social Security card
- A certified birth certificate may be used in place of a Social Security card
All documents must be original or certified copies. Photocopies, digital images, or photographs of documents will not be accepted. For further instructions, please see page 2 of Form I-9.

Details surrounding policies of student employment
Student employee positions are classified into two levels based on expected weekly hours:
- Level 1 Positions: Roles that typically require 12–20 hours per week, with a maximum of 20 hours per week.
- Level 2 Positions: Roles that typically require fewer than 10 hours per week.
Regardless of position level, students may not work more than 20 total hours per week during the academic term.
Students may hold multiple positions only in the following approved combinations:
- One Level 1 position and one Level 2 position
- Two Level 2 positions
- Any modified Level 1 job combinations require prior approval from the Office of People and Culture.
