Democracy and Christianity’s Dual Allegiances Take Center Stage at Cornerstone University’s Wisdom Conversations on October 3, 2024

News September 12, 2024

Can Christians be faithful to their deeply held religious beliefs while simultaneously being good citizens faithful to American democracy? Can Christians live out their dual citizenship as members of God’s Kingdom and members of American democracy? These questions have never been more important in an era of American democracy that is both deeply fragmented and in need of healing and moral leadership.

On October 3, 2024, Cornerstone University will tackle these urgent questions in its sixth highly anticipated Wisdom Conversations community event:

Christianity and American Democracy: Living as a Faithful Christian and a Good Citizen

Cornerstone’s Wisdom Conversations welcomes distinguished and influential government, health care, authors and journalism leaders Dr. Kristin Collier, Gabe Lyons, Dr. Marvin Olasky, and Michael Wear to Michigan’s premier Christian thought leadership series.

“Polls show that some leaders only support democracy when they win,” Olasky said as he shared his excitement for the important event. “It will be good to show [at Wisdom Conversations] that Christians of varied political persuasions can discuss and build up, not just dissect and tear down.”

Moderated by Dr. Gerson Moreno-Riaño, president of Cornerstone University, guests will explore the dual citizenship of Christ followers, a non-partisan definition of democracy, different approaches for political involvement, and how to be a good citizen who honors God through our personal and public life allegiances.

Experience this timely exchange between honored guests including:

  • Dr. Kristin Collier, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan Medical School and director of Michigan Medicine’s Program on Health, Spirituality and Religion. Collier, a pro-life advocate who converted from atheism to Christianity, has continued to faithfully live out her convictions despite criticism and student protests as she trains tomorrow’s health care leaders.
  • Gabe Lyons, an influential podcaster, best-selling author and president of THINQ Media. His work, including global events such as Q Commons, reaches over 10 million people.
  • Dr. Marvin Olasky, a prolific author, renowned educator, and former editor of WORLD Magazine. He has written 5,000 articles for national publications including WORLD, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and more. He has authored 28 influential books including “Turning Point: A Christian Worldview Declaration,” ”The Tragedy of American Compassion,” “Fighting for Liberty and Virtue”, and “Reforming Journalism”.
  • Michael Wear, CEO of the Center for Christianity and Public Life, advisor to civic leaders and former White House staffer, author of “The Spirit of Our Politics: Spiritual Formation and the Renovation of Public Life,” and senior fellow with the Trinity Forum.

Register online today for this free event on October 3 at 7 p.m. in Cornerstone’s Christ Chapel! Limited seating is available, and registrations are rapidly growing. For a recording of the conversation that will be available online after the event, follow CornerstoneU on YouTube.

Wisdom Conversations was created in the spring of 2022 as a biannual Christian thought leadership forum devoted to the respectful exchange of ideas and Biblical wisdom for humans to flourish together. One of the fastest-growing Christian thought leadership events in Michigan, previous distinguished guests who have inspired millions include Eric Metaxas, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Ross Douthat, Ed Graham, R. David Edelman, Samuel Rodriguez, Dr. Mirsolav Volf, Noah Feldman, and more. Over 3,000 attendees have joined the conversation from regional businesses, churches, colleges, schools, nonprofit organizations and community service organizations. Experience this bold, Christ-centered, influential event at Cornerstone University this fall.
