Blind GRTS Student Achieves Dreams

Nicole Davis, who graduated from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary on May 4, has not allowed her lack of sight to prevent her from achieving her life goals.
After 20 eye surgeries to salvage her vision, she became blind at 16 years old.
“Upon birth, my parents learned that I had an incurable eye condition called congenital Glaucoma,” she said. “I slowly lost my sight and was completely blind by the age of 16. Ultimately, God had another plan.”
CU Announces New Women's Basketball Coach

Cornerstone University announced today the hiring of Katie (Feenstra) Mattera as the school's new Head Women's Basketball Coach. Feenstra replaces Carla Fles who coached 14 years at Cornerstone before retiring after this past season.
The 29-year-old Mattera begins her coaching career after an eight-year career in professional basketball, including five years in the WNBA.
"First and foremost, Katie brings to Cornerstone a love for Jesus Christ and a passionate desire to mentor and develop young women as followers of Christ," said Dave Grube, Director of Athletics at Cornerstone. "Beyond that, her experiences at the highest levels of women's basketball will provide us with outstanding player recruitment, development and a blueprint for championship teams. I am confident that Katie will continue the winning tradition at Cornerstone University."
CU Student-Athlete Wins National Award

Grand Rapids, Mich.—Cornerstone University senior Janelle Brown has been named the 2011-12 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character Award recipient.
The co-captain from Midland, Mich. holds five school records for indoor and outdoor Track & Field in the race walk and has qualified for the NAIA National Championships each of her four years at Cornerstone. Brown is also a six-time NAIA All-American. She has qualified for three USA Track & Field championships and has been invited to the Penn Relays each of the past three years.
She is currently training for the 2012 Olympic trials.
Two Worlds Flipped Upside Down

About a decade ago Cornerstone’s Dean of Student Engagement, Chip Huber, began a relationship with the people of a community in Zambia.
On April 25 he released a book that tells the story of his ongoing journey “that wrecked his life” in leading high school and college students to meet the needs of a village of people on a different continent.
And, his journey to help Zambia continues.
Philosophy Society Holds First Conference

Cornerstone University's Society for Philosophy (CUSP) will hold its inaugural conference to explore what it means to think about politics as Christians with plenary speakers from Calvin College, Cornerstone University and Western Theological Seminary.
The conference, called “Thinking Christianity in the Present Tense: The Politics of Discipleship (TCPT),” will be held April 20-21 on campus.
Plenary speakers include:
James K. A. Smith, professor of philosophy and adjunct professor of congregational and ministry studies at Calvin College;
Brian J. Walsh, a chaplain for the Christian Reformed Church in Toronto;
J. Matthew Bonzo, associate professor of philosophy and head of the Institute for Christianity and Cultural Engagement at Cornerstone University;
David L. Stubbs, professor of ethics and theology at Western Theological Seminary; and
Michael Van Dyke, associate professor of English at Cornerstone University.
